Looking at graph fig. 1, which shows the proportion between the songs being more danceable or energetic, one can notice a general trend in the songs to contain the elements of both with a general sense that more is better (more songs are positioned at the top of the chart indicating that songs with the higher involvement of both elements are predominant).
Loudness and energy score very high year on year (see fig. 2). Eurovision seems to also favor less acoustic songs. Also, it is remarkable that the positivity score "valence" is around 50% meaning that songs are on average almost as positive as they are negative.
Fig. 3 line chart expresses the average audio features of Eurovision songs for every year. What is remarkable is that this chart shows that levels of the average audio features per year stay quite consistent.
Fig 4, radar chart shows the audio features from the 11 winning songs from Eurovision since 2010. Noticeable in this chart it confirms the importance of the energy and loudness as seen in previous charts. There are some notable exceptions however, with Arcade and Amar Pelos Dois being distinctly more acoustic. Valence scores also differ between songs quite a bit. Also reflective of earlier findings.
When comparing the audio features from the current most popular Eurovision songs from the last twelve years (fig. 5) we noticed that there is an apparent bias for more recent songs as songs from 2020 and 2021 dominate the chart. These songs even more confirm the trends in Eurovision songs we described.
From the analysis we performed using visualisation tools (Flourish)we came to the conclusion that there are a few existing trends in the audio featurs of Eurovision songs. The latter are created with a high focus on danceability, energy and loudness.
There is a general preference for the less acoustic songs (with the exception of a few songs) and a relative unbiasedness to the positive (happy, cheerful, euphoric) or negative (sad, depressed, angry) songs.
The trends described above are best observed in the recent songs from 2020 and 2021. Overall, we noticed that in the past decade the performing songs have managed to keep relatively constant audio features.
